The Barnowl Jersey Herd: The Barnowl prefix was registered in 1969, the herd developing from an initial purchase from the Preshaw dispersal sale. The tenancy of Cloisters Farm commenced in 1984, separating from the family farm at Daventry. The strong move towards New Zealand bloodlines occurring nationally at that time was moderated with the use of a UK X Ferdon Glens Coronet son, Crondall CoronetsWizard, which stamped the herd strongly and gave a strong and uniform base from which to develop. A multiple Breed Champion himself, he sired no less than 7 Champions in the herd (see below), plus 26 winning progeny groups using more than 15 offspring:
The next major bull for the herd was Zebre Design Fillpailer, bred by the late John Pallot in Jersey. He sired champions including Barnowl Fillpailers Zoom Ex90 GM MM(3), Barnowl Fillpailers Gladys Ex92, Barnowl Fillpailers Sarah Ex90 GM, Barnowl Fillpailers Chamomile VG85 1Star and Barnowl Fillpailers Fiona VG87. When John subsequently retired he entrusted the continued breeding of the Zebre and Bouquet families to us. Since then bulls used with good effect include Barnowl Flash Fanfare, Sambo, Remake, Barnowl Fanfares Samurai, Barnowl Simon, Barnowl Zorro, Senior, Excitation, Comerica, Iatola, Barnowl Viscount. Recent sires include Lix, Kyros, Miles, Legacy and test bulls as well as our own bulls from the Fanfare and Plant families. 2012 was the first year that sexed semen was used with fertility rates similar to non-sexed. You can find more information about our main cow families - including Fantasy/Fanfare, Gateau, Plant, Evening, Isis, Countess, Lily and Victoria families as well as the Bouquets and Zebres. The 2012 purchase of the Priestcar herd has added four further female lines, and we also house Pat Rosser’s Susie family. |
