Major Show Awards From Parkland to Production, Sidelines to Supremes It is hard for those only involved with the Jersey Breed in the 21st century to appreciate the change in the Jersey cow over the last thirty years, or to understand the change in mindset which herds such as Alderston, Boswell, Ellerdine, Kerbanks, Norwoodpark, Saxown, Upgate and Barnowl made to the perception and reality of the modern Jersey. During the 1960s – 1990s the “gentry’s cow” was considered a weird hobby rather than a commercial alternative and it was these commercial herds with production and longevity who also upset the Holstein dominance in the Interbreed ring which did much to convince dairymen to consider the Jersey. Three other factors contributed as well: firstly as Holsteins grew ever larger they no longer fitted cubicles and parlours, secondly the 2001 Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak which gave forward thinkers an opportunity to re-plan their business. For them to consider Jerseys as a real alternative the commercial validity of the cows had to have been proven. Lastly, UK Jerseys had also become a pro-active promotion and marketing organisation supporting the grassroots work of these herds. Major show awards
